GQ Australia

A photography work within a studio setting. The photoshoot was done while keeping in mind the brand’s need for a professional and elegant look in the pictures. Post-process edits were also done to enhance the images.

Project Overview

QG magazine needs a fashion series for its upcoming edition. They want a series of crisp, clean images featuring a sharp and distinguished look. Think crisp shirts and sharp suits appealing to a professional and style-conscious market. QG is happy with a classic look for the images but would love to see some element of creative flair, either to the clothing, lighting, posing or others.

Objectives

The goal of this project is to produce:

  • Photoshoot mood board

  • Proof sheet with the raw images

  • 8 Final images, retouched or edited, and saved as JPGs with quality 9

These deliverables would then be sent to the client for approval, especially the final images. The other stages of the project such as the mood board, and location scouting would be handled by myself. This includes creating the shoot planner, costings, quotations, final invoice, and model release.

Concept & Ideation

In response to GQ’s request for sharp and refined imagery, I began by creating mood boards for the overall aesthetic and poses. Before the photoshoot, I conducted location scouting to ensure a suitable setting. Model selection focused on someone who could embody the strong and stylish look GQ desired.

In the pre-production stage, I meticulously planned the wardrobe, and props, and considered the financial aspects. Collaborating with the model, we arranged two sets of clothing as per the client’s preferences.

During the studio session, I guided the amateur model with clear directions, employing lighting techniques and poses from the mood boards. Multiple poses were experimented with to showcase the clothing’s characteristics.

At the post-photoshoot stage, I carefully selected and processed the final images using Lightroom and Photoshop. This involved refining elements such as hair tidy-ups, blemish removal, and giving the skin a polished look, ensuring the images met the client’s expectations. I then exported them to the required image specifications as GQ had asked for.

Reflections

The challenge I encountered in this project was experimenting with various lighting techniques and poses to create the desired look. It was also a challenge to communicate with the model as she was also new to the industry.

This project underscored proper photoshoot planning from the pre-planning to the post-processing stage. It highlighted the photography capabilities, studio lighting and post-processing skills. Additionally, I learned how to work effectively with models in a photoshoot.
